Well, this month has been pretty fun. It was cool to finally
get some Star Wars love on the blog. It was also cool to finally talk
about TNG and other Trek-related stuff.
So, now that I’ve gotten to the end of this month, you know it’s time
for a free-for-all battle between the franchises! Can Spock defeat the coldness
of Darth Vader? Can Harry Kim overcome the blandness of Anakin Skywalker? Will
Khan kick Palpatine’s keister? Will Uhura and Leia strut their stuff on The
Universe’s Next Top Model? Will Bashir be able to fare well against the
robo-medic? Well, I have no freaking clue. Besides, who really wants to see
that?
Instead of saying which is better, I just want talk about
why I like both franchises.Oh yeah, I've kind of done that already... hmm...
You know, I really don’t know what else to say. I mean, I’ve
said what I like about the movies, the TV shows, and the books. The franchises have a lot of great stories that you can follow. Both franchises have good and
interesting characters that you either love or love to hate. They’ve provided
laughs, brought tears, and even made you think a little bit. You can also just
sit back and watch (or read) some awesome stories and awesome action. They've even got some cool tech that I wish existed. Heck, some of our new tech exists because it was inspired by these franchises.
I thought about
laying out the differences between the franchises but I can do that in one paragraph. Star Trek
basically shows what humanity could be if we actually got our crap together. It
takes place in a somewhat nice future. It’s more steeped in science and ethical dilemmas as well. Star Wars is
essentially about a war that takes place long ago in another galaxy. Instead of
being steeped in science and “what- ifs,” it goes more into the fantasy genre
and doesn’t explain all of the science stuff. It’s essentially a fight between
good and evil. Both franchises have good stuff.
Are they perfect? No, they aren’t. No franchise is perfect. Just because I really
like them doesn’t mean I’m blind to their flaws. The Original Trilogy has a
couple. The prequels definitely have their faults. Not all of the Trek movies
are that good. Even the best shows have their low moments. Then, you get to
Voyager and Enterprise. Yep, I know they’ll show up on here someday. Even
though the franchises have had their low moments, I still love them.
Wow, I connected Scott Bakula, Chris Pine, and Hayden
Christensen together. Could this pic break the Internet in two?
In the end, there can only be one. Yes, I had to put the
obvious Highlander reference here. While I like both franchises, I like Star
Trek more. If you’ve ever looked at the stuff on here, you can probably tell
that I love Star Trek. While the Star Wars franchise has a lot of good things,
I think Trek just has more for me. This doesn’t mean I don’t like Star Wars.
The Original Trilogy is probably my favorite trilogy of films and The Empire Strikes
Back is one of my favorite movies of all time. Still, there’s something about
Trek the keeps me coming back to it whether it’s the movies, the shows, or the
books.
Since I haven’t done it yet, here’s a ranking of the Star
Wars movies from least favorite to favorite:
6. Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones – Either this
or TPM were going to be here. While it doesn't have some of the things that made
Episode 1 suck, it has a lot of other faults. The most noticeable one is that stale romance.
5. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace – You know this
one had to be down here. I don’t even need to say why. At least this movie has
Darth Maul! Yes, I kinda of prefer him over Vlad the Impaler.
4. Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi – I know, I
know. I’m not saying I don’t like this film. It’s my least favorite to my most
favorite, remember? While it is a good conclusion to the series, the Ewoks, the
so-called incest, and some dumb moments drag this movie down a bit.
3. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith – While this
movie has some of the things that hampered the other prequels, it’s still a
good movie. I liked the bleakness of it. It’s definitely the best prequel of
the three.
2. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope – It’s the movie that
started it all. When really thinking about it, this movie had to go here. It’s
really good and pretty memorable for good reasons.
1. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back – This movie
takes the top spot for three reasons. It continues to grow the characters, it’s
an awesome sequel, and Vader is boss in it. It’s one of my favorite movies.
Well, I officially end Star Trek/Star Wars month. Next year,
I’ll probably just do a sci-fi month since it’s time to include more of the
science fiction genre. Yes, I know Star Wars isn’t completely sci-fi, but it’s
there, okay? Well, I’m out. Peace and God Bless.

Return of the Jedi was my favorite because I was just old enough to care when that came out, and not to old to realize what a let down it was, and I loved it.
