Favorites - Ten Favorite Superman Villains

Well, it’s been a busy month. I think I’ll take a small break after this. Now that I’ve looked at 20-ish villains of Superman’s, you know a list of my favorite ones is next, right? As I said before, Superman has more than Lex Luthor and those two other dudes. Some of them are alien powerhouses.Others were ordinary folk who got transformed into something horrible. Then, you have the ordinary guys who are intelligent, rich, or pretty screwed up in the head. Sometimes, those ordinary guys are all three. I’ve already said a lot on them, so I’ll be quick about it.

First, here are some honorable mentions that didn’t make the main list:
  • Livewire – Superman doesn’t have many female villains, so Livewire stuck out to me for that. She has the power to over electricity and hard hatred for Superman. Plus, she’s got a cool power set and a nice costume (the animated one). Hey, it suits her.
  • Hank Henshaw – Hank Henshaw, aka the Cyborg Superman, had his big moments. He tried to sully Superman’s legacy and actually destroyed Coast City. He’s even taken on the Green Lantern Corps. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have many good moments out of that. At least his look is pretty cool and threatening. His origin story is also pretty sad.
  • Bizarro – Yes, folks. He’s in the honorable mentions. While I like mirror image of Superman, he can get a little grating at times. That backwards speech of can be a little disorientating. At least he has more nuance than most villains since he isn’t always one. As I said, he’s a little “bizarre.”
Now, here's the somewhat definitive list:

10. Toyman – While a grown man playing with toys is okay, a grown man using toys to commit crimes is definitely worrisome. The Toyman is usually someone who’s been screwed over by somebody. Some iterations try to make him even more weird and disturbing, but I don’t know about that. His toy motif is pretty out there to begin with. Sometimes, he can even give Superman a run for his money.

9. Metallo – Take the Terminator and mix it with Kryptonite. That’s Metallo in a nutshell. He’s got a cool look and can sometimes do interesting stuff with his metallic body. He also has one of Supeman’s deadliest weaknesses: Kryptonite. That’s all, though. He’s best used as a lackey for someone bigger.

8. The Eradicator – The Eradicator is another threat from Krypton. Even though it’s just a device, it provided a big threat to Superman. It holds to its strict view of what Krypton was and tries to enforce it on everything. It tried to brainwash Superman, make Earth Krypton, and kill the people close to him. Even though it was a hero at some point, it’s kind of tough to forget the other stuff.

7. Mr. Mxyzptlk – Next up is the imp from the 5th Dimension. He has the power to warp reality and all he does is use it to mess with Superman… mostly. He has his scary moments. He even surprises Superman at some points by helping or trying to help him.

6. Parasite – Just imagine Rogue from the X-Men but purple, male, and not too good looking.
The Parasite has one of the deadliest powers in that he can absorb energy. He can literally kill with a touch. He can even absorb memories and powers, so you don’t want to be around this guy. Put him in front of Superman and you’ll have an even deadlier threat.

5. Doomsday – Doomsday can make a claim few villains can make: he killed Superman. Other than his unholy strength and literal immortality, there ain’t much to him. Still, if there’s one villain you just want to see Superman beat up, it’s Doomsday. The spiky guy’s literally a force of nature.

4. Zod – If you want to see Superman as a dictator and bad guy, you can look at General Zod. You could also read a crapton of Elseworld stories. Anyway, he tried to take over Krypton but got thrown in the Phantom Zone for good measure. While more has been added to his story in the comics, he’s still a jackass who wants to rule his way. Anyone who gets in that way should probably move especially if Zod is under a yellow sun.

3. Brainiac – When I think of a bad alien, Brainiac isn’t the first at mind. He probably should be, though. In some iterations, he’s been a threat to other worlds especially Krypton. Whether he’s a Coluan scientist or a Kryptonian A.I., Brainiac is one who is a major threat to Superman and the universe at large.

2. Darkseid – While Darkseid was more of a general DC villain these days, Superman was the one he kept running into. Not only is he more powerful than Superman, he rules his own planet. Not many of these guys can claim that. Heck, he can send his own legion of folk to beat him up!

1. Lex Luthor – You might have known this was coming. He’s one of my favorite villains of all time (of all time!). The guy could do great things, but he’s too obsessed with power and destroying Superman. Not only has he been a threat to Superman, but he’s almost taken the whole world down with him. He’s exhibits the worst aspects of humanity and that gets him the top spot.

And with that, I officially end Superman Month. It seems weird highlighting villains especially these days. You turn on the news and something else horrific has happened. At least the ones I've talked about don't exist... sort of. We got actual bad folk to deal with. Anyway, that's all I got for today. Peace, God Bless, and be careful out there.
