Graphic Novels - The Dark Knight Returns

As Internet reviewer Linkara says… It’s Miller Time!!!!

As you can tell by the image and title, I’m going to be talking about The Dark Knight Returns. It’s one of Frank Miller’s most known works and it’s the story that redefined Batman for a long time.  It seems like almost every Batman writer has been influenced by TDKR. Nolan's last Batman movie was also influenced by this story.The story is written and penciled by Frank Miller. Klaus Janson provides the inks for the miniseries. Lynn Varley provided the colors. Since I’m looking at this story, I’ll also talk about the two-part animated movie that Warner Bros. released last year.

Before I get too far in, here’s a little background with the story and it all has to do with the public library. I first heard about the story in a book called Tales of the Dark Knight, a book that talked about the first 50 years of Batman. I then heard about it in Who Needs A Superhero?, a Christian-themed book that linked Christian teachings to superheroes. I finally got to read the story when I found out that my hometown’s public library added graphic novels to their inventory. It’s now a part of my “little” collection of trades. Here’s a quick lowdown of the whole thing.

Graphic Novels - Wolverine

This week, we've looked at two things that involve Wolverine: the best he is at what he does...and what he does isn't really nice blah blah blah. The first thing was the "atrocity" known as X-Men Origins: Wolverine. This second thing is a four-issue miniseries that involves Wolverine in Japan. It's called....Wolverine. I came across this story in the library a while ago. I eventually found an older reprint of the miniseries at McKay's. How is it? Well, I'll save that for later.

The story is done by Chris Claremont. Claremont, of course, was "the writer" of X-Men for about two decades. I've covered a lot of his stuff here before. The artist is some dude named Frank Miller...yes, the Frank Miller. This was during his hey-day of Daredevil and The Dark Knight Returns and before he apparently lost it all (see The Dark Knight Strikes Again, All-Star Batman and Robin, The Spirit, and other things for examples). On second thought, don't see the Spirit! Anyway, let's see if Claremont and Miller do it good.

Random Thoughts #7

Well, it's a Saturday night in Pulaski (brr!), and I have a presentation and two papers to work on. I think it's time for random thoughts before I get into those things.

Grad School
Well, grad school has been going well for me. From what I can tell, I'm doing okay. As I said, I have a presentation to perfect and two papers, wit one being a re-submit 'cause that unfortunately happens and one that shouldn't be too hard. My presentation is pretty much gonna be on how to manage your stakeholders in an IT (or IS) project. Here's hoping it turns out well. It also looks like I may be taking 9 hours next semester. Since two of the classes I have to take are both scheduled to my liking, I'll be taking those two on  Thursdays and on the other back on Monday. It should be interesting.

Women
Yes, this topic is back. Let's see...women. That's all.  ):|

Frank Miller...
I just read this little article on BleedingCool about Frank Miller's thoughts on Occupy _____. All I can say is "Wow." Now, I really have no thoughts on the Occupy thing. I have my own "occupying" I need to get to. Anyway, that's pretty much all I have to say on that topic. There are three things I have a hard time talking about: Politics, religion, and love. I'd rather listen to someone talk about them rather than I talk about them.

So what will I be doing next? It looks like I'll be doing two GNs from the 80's (again). One is controversial, while the other is the aftermath of something controversial. Then, maybe I'll get to the next two issues of Suicide Squad.
